I paid attention a little because i realized that I had read an article recently in the New York Times Magazine about how a Yale Graduate who had been involved in a crime at age 17 was treated even after getting out after 9 years in prison and how no matter what he did he could not escape the past because of the system.
He recounted the case of the first friend who was given 53 years after getting arrested for grande theft auto which would have carried 5- 10 but after talking to some one in his family who said something that threw him into such despair that he grabbed a police officers gun and tried to kill himself.
The Officers embarrassed that the kid had so easily disarmed them, lied and said he had threatened them and was given 53 years… 17 Year old first offender…
